The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged voters who participated in Saturday’s governorship polls in Kogi and Bayelsa States to protect their votes.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Saturday, urged the voters to remain alert and resist all undemocratic brigand elements.
Ologbondiyan advised the voters to take all legitimate steps to protect their votes to the very end. He also told the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to ensure that nothing happened to the ballots.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the military to protect the people in their quest to protect their votes. The PDP spokesman also urged the police boss to beef up security at the collation centres to ensure that only legitimate votes counted.
Ologbondiyan accused the All Progressives Congress of moving around collation centres with hoodlums and compromised security officials. The PDP spokesman also accused the APC of shooting and disrupting collation processes in their alleged desperation to subvert the aspiration of the people.
The statement read: “The party cautioned INEC to note that the people already knew how they voted. They already knew the outcome of the polls at the respective polling units. Also, the voters already knew how the parties are standing and as such, would never accept any alternation of results at the collation level.
“We also call on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the military high command to be patriotic by taking measures to assist and protect the people, in their quest to protect their votes.
“We charged security forces to check the agents of Governor Yahaya Bello and the APC, who are moving around collation centers with armed hoodlums and compromised security personnel, shooting and disrupting collation processes in their desperation to subvert the aspiration of the people.
“The IGP should, therefore, beef up security at the collation centers to ensure that only legitimate votes count. This is because any result that does not reflect the will of the people will surely not be accepted”.
