The federal government has declared a southwest security outfit, operation Amotekun, as illegal, Premium Times reports.
In a statement issued by the minister of justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on Tuesday, he said the setting up of the organisation “runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law.”
Recall that last week, South West governors including Governor Seyi Makinde launched the security outfit to tame insecurity and kidnapping in the region.
The outfit, according to the Governors will complement the work of the police.
Policing is a federal duty under the exclusive list of the Nigerian constitution.
Some groups in the Northern region have kicked against the modus operandi of the Amotekun.
