Buhari Appoints NNPC Board Acting Chairman
President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Dr Thomas John as Acting Alternate Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC ) Governing Board.
Naijaparry reports that the Corporation disclosed this in a statement signed by the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the new appointment takes effect immediately.
The statement noted that he would hold the position until a new Minister of Petroleum Resources or Minister of State for Petroleum Resources would be appointed to assume the Chairmanship or Alternate Chairmanship position.
According to the statement, this is in line with Sections 1(3) and 2(1) of the NNPC Act.
John, a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, was before the appointment a member of the NNPC Governing Board. Dr John joined the NNPC in 1974 and rose to become its group managing director (GMD) from 1990-1992.

Brief Bio Of Dr Thomas John
Dr. Thomas John serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Hydropec Engineering Services Limited. Dr John was the first Manager of the Kaduna Refining & Petrochemical Company and the pioneering Managing Director of Eleme Petrochemicals Company, Port Harcourt before rising to become the Group Managing Director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
He serves as Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum Limited. After retiring from NNPC, he served on the Board of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as a Non-Executive Director.
Dr John holds an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology, the Czech Republic, a PhD in Reaction Kinetics from Queens University, Ontario, Canada and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (FNCHE).
